The health of the LH HHs

Hollandse Herders are said to be a very healthy breed. Yes, I agree on that, but... It doesn't mean that the breed is absolutely healthy, but when considering how deeply inbred it is I must admit, that the breed is very healthy.

Anyway there are several diseases which can be inherited:
  • hip dysplasia
  • elbow dysplasia
  • eye diseases (specially in wirehaireds goniodysplasia and glaucoma!)
  • AIHA (Acute Immunology Allergy)
  • Hypothyreosis
  • Spondylosis
  • Teeth failures
  • Uncorrect bites
  • Crooked tails
  • Floppy ears
  • missinc testicles

The listings I have made are far from complete, unfortunately too many people are ashamed for their dog having some kind of illness and so they don't tell others about what is going on. That is a pity when thinking the future of the breed, as if the breeders don't know about the possible diseases, they can't try to avoid them in the breeding. So my biggest hope for the future is that people talk more openly about the problems with their dogs - remember; it's not the fault of the owner nor the breeder that the dog falls ill! But when working together into better awareness of the problems, we can built the future for our lovely breed, longhaireds!
